Guide to choosing the correct Burley Hitch for your bike

Burley offers 5 different styles of hitches for mounting your Burley trailer to a variety of styles of bicycles. Please read this guide to determine which hitch will work best for your bicycle

Standard Hitch for Quick Releases & Nutted Axles

socket style hitch
Breezer style (socket style) dropouts

Use this hitch for the majority of bicycles, both those that use quick releases and nutted axle rear wheel hubs. This includes all styles of bicycles including full-suspension mountain bikes and bicycles with disc brakes.

The size of the hole in the bracket is large enough to fit all sizes of nutted axles.

Bicycles that have Breezer style or other non-flat dropouts such as the dropouts shown in this photo require the use of the quick release-alternative hitch shown below.

Most bicycles have flat dropouts that work nicely with this hitch, but have a look at your dropouts before ordering.

Classic Hitch
The classic hitch can only be used on standard double triangle frames (no full suspension or other non-traditional frame designs). It also can not be used on bicycles with disc brakes.

The Classic Hitch does not mount to the hub area of the bicycle and therefore can work on both bicycles with either quick releases or nutted axles.

Use the Classic Hitch if you prefer to completely remove the hitch along with your Burley trailer whenever you choose to remove your Burley trailer from your bicycle.

Quick Release-Alternative Hitch
Use this hitch for bicycles that have a quick release on the rear wheel and also have Breezer style or other non-flat dropouts. The Quick Release-Alternative Hitch is available in standard(125mm- 135mm) or tandem(140mm - 160mm) sizing.

Nutted Axle-Alternative Hitch
Use this hitch for bicycles that have a nutted axle on the rear wheel and also have Breezer style or other non-flat dropouts. The Nutted Axle-Alternative Hitch is available for 9.5mm x 26tpi or 10.5mm x 26tpi nutted axles.

Be sure to determine the correct size for your bicycle. The size of your rear axle can generally be determined by looking it up in reference to the manufacturer of the rear hub.

If you can not determine the size of the rear axle through the hub manufacturer's brochure or online information you can determine axle size by removing one of the nuts. Take the nut into a hardware store or local bike shop. Determine its size by checking which size axle (or bolt) it will thread onto.

3/8"(9.5mm) x 26tpi: Taiwanese hubs incl. Sovos Flip-Flop hubs, most Suzue models, Old Deore XT

10.5mm x 26tpi: Sachs 3x7, Sturney Archer, I.G.H.
